English Style

As stud poker is played in England, each player receives two cards face down and one card face up, as in seven-card stud. There is a betting interval, then two more face-up cards are dealt, with a betting interval after each. Each active player may then discard one card and draw a replacement as in draw poker, the replacement being dealt face up or face down according to the card discarded, and there is then a fourth betting interval.

Each player may then discard and draw one more card, as before, after which there is a final betting interval and a showdown. Each player has only five cards for the showdown.
A player may stand pat instead of drawing, but if he stands pat for the first draw he must remain pat for the second draw.

How to play: In the early stages, hands can be judged as in seven-card stud. It must be remembered that the hands will run a little lower than in seven-card stud because a player cannot keep all his possibilities when obtaining his sixth and seventh cards. Thus, for example, a player with a full house possibility must sometimes throw away one possibility to obtain a sixth or seventh card. Three-of-a-kind is therefore a fairly good hand, and three aces will win very often.
