This
is the same as five-card stud except that after the fourth face-up
card is dealt, and after the betting interval that follows, a sixth
card is dealt face down to each player and there is a final betting
interval. In the showdown, each player may select five of his six
cards to be his hand. (Some prefer to deal the fifth card down and
the sixth card up.)
How to play: Since everyone is playing for high (compare with six-card
stud high-low), the average winning hand in a seven handed game
will be a low two pairs. The values at the early stages are about
the same as in five-card stud.
In the variation in which the fifth card is dealt down, the betting
round before and after the second hole card is of great significance.
If you have the lead going into the second hole card, it is impossible
for your opponents to judge whether you have improved or not. Therefore,
especially in pot limit or table stakes play, be wary of committing
yourself just before the second hole card unless you have strong
values. (In a limit game, this factor is less important, although
it should still be reckoned with.)
